Student question answered – Confusing English sentences.
Today, in an online English class I was teaching, a student asked me the following question: What is the difference between these two sentences?
My favourite restaurant is Fabellos.
My favourite restaurant was Fabellos.
“My favourite restaurant is Fabellos,” means this is the speaker’s favourite restaurant and he/she will very likely return to this restaurant in the future.
“My favourite restaurant was Fabellos,” also means this is currently the speaker’s favourite restaurant, but he/she will never visit it again, maybe because the restaurant has permanently closed, or it is located in a place (for example, a holiday destination) the speaker will return to again. Despite never getting the opportunity to return to the restaurant again, this restaurant still remains the speaker’s favourite restaurant at this current time.
